Tech Sales Resume Examples for SDR and BDR Roles
By New to Sales · Published
A tech sales resume should make your relevance easy to find. It does not need to sound like a senior account executive’s resume when you are applying for your first SDR or BDR role. These are fictional formatting and writing examples, not client results. Replace every detail with information you can explain in an interview.
Start with a straightforward layout
Use a single-column document with clear headings: summary, experience, projects or relevant activities, skills, and education. Keep contact information as selectable text. Avoid putting important information only in graphics, icons, headers, or complex tables.
Follow the application’s file-format instructions. No resume format can guarantee compatibility with every applicant tracking system. Open the exported file and check that the text is readable and the headings still make sense.
- Put your target role and relevant evidence near the top.
- Use consistent dates and job titles.
- List tools only when you have used them or clearly label coursework.
- Remove generic skill ratings such as “communication: 95%.”
Example 1: A customer-service career changer
This example emphasizes listening, follow-up, and organization. It does not convert support work into sales experience that never happened. A short project section can show how you are learning prospecting.
Practice example
Jordan Rivera | Austin, TX | [email] | [phone] | [LinkedIn] SUMMARY Customer-service professional pursuing an entry-level SDR role. Experience clarifying customer needs, explaining options, and tracking follow-ups. Building prospecting skills through self-directed practice. EXPERIENCE Customer Service Associate | [Actual employer] | [Dates] • Asked clarifying questions to identify customer issues and route requests to the right team. • Recorded follow-up actions in [system actually used] and kept customers informed of next steps. PROJECT Prospecting practice — self-directed • Researched three potential customer accounts for a fictional scheduling product and wrote an email and call opener for each.
Example 2: An SDR with experience
If you have sales experience, describe both activity and the quality of the outcome. Distinguish meetings booked from meetings held or accepted. Use the actual time period and denominator when presenting a rate.
The bracketed bullet below is a template, not a suggested claim. If you cannot verify a metric, replace it with an accurate description of your responsibilities.
Practice example
SUMMARY SDR with [actual duration] of experience prospecting [customer segment]. Experience researching accounts, qualifying interest, and coordinating handoffs with account executives. EXPERIENCE Sales Development Representative | [Employer] | [Dates] • Researched [actual segment] accounts and tailored outreach to [relevant business problem]. • Booked [verified number] meetings during [period]; [verified number] were held and accepted under the team’s qualification criteria. • Documented prospect context and unresolved questions in [CRM actually used] before AE handoffs.
Rewrite bullets around evidence
A useful bullet answers three questions: what did you do, in what context, and what happened? Start with a verb, add enough detail to understand scope, and include a verified result when available. Do not pad every bullet with a number.
- Weak: “Responsible for emails.” Better: “Wrote follow-up emails summarizing customer questions and agreed next steps.”
- Weak: “Sales expert.” Better: “Practiced account research and cold-call openings in weekly peer role-plays.”
- Weak: “Exceeded all targets.” Better: state the actual target, time period, and measured outcome, if you have the records.
Match keywords to real experience
Read the role description and identify repeated responsibilities, tools, and customer types. Include the terms that accurately describe your background. A candidate with no CRM experience should not list Salesforce proficiency just because it appears in the job description.
If you completed a course or practice project, put it in that context. For example, “CRM coursework covering lead records and follow-up tasks” is more accurate than “CRM administrator.” Keyword matching should help a reader understand fit, not conceal gaps.
Check the resume before applying
Read each bullet aloud and ask whether you could answer a follow-up question about it. Verify dates, contact details, file name, and links. Ask another person to identify your target role after a quick read.
